Away Results
It’s getting
to the stage where we need a camera to get some visual proof of the results and
the good time to be had going away to bike races. This is how it stands so far:
Amanda Wins A Medal
Congratulations
to Amanda Curry, Neile McLennan and Tony Clark who
went away to this one. Masters racing at its leg ripping
best. The best A graders that masters racing
can muster turn up: ex-olympians, Aussie and State
champions stretch their legs for this event.
Amanda Curry
competed in the road race and medalled. Finishing in 3rd
place in her division. A dropped chain mid-way through the race meant
chasing the bunch home for the result. A great effort.
Neile
McLennan went under an illness cloud and was shown no mercy, dropped in lap 3
of the 80 km event. He didn’t contest the criterium
on the Sunday – a good decision.
Tony Clarke
in Masters 4 raced some riders coming off the back of the Aussie Champs
finished behind in the road race and a lung busting 12th in the criterium.
Avanti
Classic Handicap – 80km.

Tyalgum
Cup on
This years event provided cyclists with five grades to choose
from and a 36km out and back race. It’s a flat out and fast event over a bumpy,
undulating 36kms.
NRCC were
represented by 15 nominated riders this year, up from 6 last year. A good showing from our members for one of the closer Open Events
of the summer season. With
The Tyalgum Cup (did anyone see a cup?!) is all over in an hour and an excellent
away-race, yet close enough to get home again in half a day. Think about it for
next year.
A Grade: Once again a strong field with Neale McLennan and Brendan Cole tucked themselves away in the
fast moving bunch. Like all the grades, if you aren’t in the first 5 riders
coming into the final turns, your race is done. Brendan and Neale
learnt that lesson a couple of hundred metres away from the final turn. Their race was done. Reuben Donati, from Byron club slotted
into 5th place.
B Grade:
C Grade: Robert Malcolm, Shane Hulbert,
Jason Nowland, Hal Holley and Graeme Turner
represented here. Jason rode a well judged race and finished a fast fourth. A
good result highlighted by a smart finish.
A comeback ride for Rob saw him finish in the pack while Graeme rode strongly
on the front for most of the race except for the moment he slipped to the back
and fell over a rider who clipped the wheels in front of him.
Hal and
Shane had a shocker in the last km and finished out of contention. Mick McCall
made the mistake of following Hal and Shane, chances ruined right there. Jesse
Munro from Byron was in the pack as well.
D grade: Garry Creighton, Stephen Alder
and Iain McCallum pushed this grade along and Iain was rewarded with a strong
finishing 3rd place. Garry finished 7th and Stephen rode
strongly in his first open event to claim a 5th place. Glen Hannan
from Byron finished in the pack.
E Grade:
Terry Wiggins
got in for 3rd while Jane Creamer from Byron club finished 5th .
Well done
to all riders and look out for more away-races during the winter season.

NRCC
Ballina Criterium 16/12/07
Forty-six
riders faced the starter at NRCC’s second critierium for the summer season. The bigger bunches made
for some exciting racing on the quick circuit. A Grade averaged 43km, while B
Grade kept it at 40km per hour even with a slight headwind down the back
straight.
A big
thank you to our volunteers on the day: Gary Creighton - Commissaire, Frank Day, Richard Hennes,
Greg Brown, Iain McCallum, Neil McClennan,
Our
January (20th) Criterium will be an interclub event.
Bunch number should be up and the racing intense. Be a good day to race against
riders from other clubs. Start training.

Club Presentation Night
The club's road race season ended with a
successful presentation at the Wollongbar hall on Saturday evening, 27th. The
BBQ and nibbles were organised by Craig Gibson and expertly handled by Scott
and Craig Gibson and Tony Camilleri. Salads and
deserts were provided by Sonia McHugh, Julie Day and Suzanna Turner, with Frank
Day and Suzanna organising the deserts.
President Hal Holley was the evening's MC,
running both the indoor bike races and the presentation. The races proved yet
again that Australians will bet on anything going, with lots of laughter (and
some cheating) during the 4 races. I should have lodged a complaint about the
lack of the number 3 on the dice during my race!
Many thanks to all involved, to Iain McCallum
for the unique trophies, to the dishwashers at the end of the evening, to the
Byron Free Riders members and all other participants, for making it a great
night.

NRCC Ballina Criterium 18 November 2007
Thirty- five riders faced the starter at the Ballina Industrial Estate for our
first summer criterium for 2007-'08. The day was fine
and the track good, with a generous slab of hot mix down the back straight,
making a quick course even quicker.
Riders of all
abilities turned out for the early morning hit-out, ranging from a fresh batch
of juniors finding their feet in racing through to a fast riding pack of
Clayton Fettell's mates in A grade. Riders raced in a
clock-wise direction for the first time, making the final sprint interesting.
Right hand corners at speed and fast, tight bunches were the order of the day.
Good to see a few
riders returning for some racing: Michael McCall, Jesse Munro and Peter?
McGrath alongside the new faces in A grade. And for the
regulars, it's always good to see you.
Next criterium is on the 16/12/07. Racing in the normal
direction

Well it
rained all day except for the few hours needed to dry the course and stage the
event. As it turned out, the racing conditions were quite good. Race promoter
Anthony Mortimer leads a charmed existence; I gave the event no chance at 3pm but
half an hour
later it was all good to go for the three race event.
NRCC was
represented by what is turning out to be a regular crit
crew. Shane Hulbert and I put ourselves meekly into C Grade, while Brendan Cole
started in A Grade which consisted of 24 other competitors.
Getting into C Grade turned out to be a good move. The race was light on
numbers but a strong enough field. Shane pulled out a second in the sprint
while yours truly couldn’t quite get over a return-to-racing Reuben Donati for fourth.
Brendan rode
very well in A Grade. He missed the vital break in a race that was travelling at break-neck speed and then topped that off
with a puncture. He bravely chased at the head of the main bunch but to no
avail. He was only chasing some of the best elite and junior riders on offer at
the moment. A good hit-out none-the-less.

Jacaranda Criterium 3
November 2007
The
Jacaranda Festival was
the excuse the local Grafton club used to close off the main street of the town
for a few hours of criterium racing. The course is up
and back, negotiating two roundabouts, a 180 degree corner into a short
finishing straight. Fast and furious was the order of the day.
Northern
Rivers was represented by a number of junior cyclists, a couple of crusty
veterans and the ever dominating Brendan Cole.
In the
Junior Events, Julia Petronio rode strongly in her
first race, chasing the lead pack of riders and fighting onto the finish.
Kasper
Oxley, Kasey Clark and
Rory Skinner raced in the under 17 & under 15 races, Kasper
came out a winner with Kasey third and Rory chasing them home. Good effort all
round by our juniors.
Hal and
Shane had a go in B Grade. Hal managed a fifth. Shane had to come out of too
many corners on a day when his legs deserted him - next time for Shane. Chris
Pratt from Byron club had a fall, those of you who know could give him a call.
He'll be convalescing for a while.
Brendan
Cole rode a well judged race to beat some notable A Graders home. His last lap
was as strong as you will see, holding off all challengers by about 3 lengths.
A well deserved win.
